Betty (Forte) Scott was born in Hannibal, Missouri and attended
the all black Douglass High School for 11 years. Due to mandatory
integration in 1956, Betty graduated from Hannibal High School. While a
student at Douglass High School, Betty was chosen twice to attend a summer
music camp at Lincoln. It was during this time that Betty decided to enroll
as a student at Lincoln. While at Lincoln Betty was a sophomore
representative for the Student Government Association, student aide for Dr.
James Miller, member of the University band and chorus and Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority.
In 1962, Betty married Second Lieutenant
Donald Scott, a fellow Lincolnite thus beginning a very rich, blessed and
interesting life for her. Along with their three children, Lloyd
(deceased), Jeffrey and Mel and the family pet Toussaint, the Scotts moved a
total of 25 times (and lived in twice as many different houses). Many of
those moves were made without the absent warrior who was busy moving up the
promotion ladder. The moves included many interesting parts of the USA,
Okinawa and Germany. When she was not busy temporarily setting up or
dismantling a home, she was busy organizing young wives for community
projects, entertaining dignitaries, teaching Sunday School and working for
the federal government. Military life afforded Betty the opportunity to
make many new, interesting and loyal friends.
When Donald retired from
the United States Army as a Brigadier General in 1992, he promised Betty
that she would never have to move again. That promise lasted 18 months.
Once again she moved with Donald to the DC area so Donald could start the
National Civilian Community Corp for President Clinton's Americorp program.
After moving to the DC area, the Scott's became active with the DC Alumni.
For the past 6 years Betty has been busy
standing by the side of Donald while he performs his duties as Deputy
Librarian, the Library of Congress. She has also been busy as grandma for
Taylor, Desiree, Gina and Summer.
