THE SOLDIER'S FUND
The Soldier's Fund is a special scholarship program for alumni in the
military to support their alma mater. Brigadier General Donald L. Scott,
US Army Retired (LU Class of 1960), proposed to establish this scholarship fund
during the celebration of LU's 125th Anniversary to honor the memory of colored
infantryman Samuel Sexton who, despite earning only a meager salary, contributed
nearly a whole year's pay to help start Lincoln University at the end of the
Civil War. BG Scott's proposal was that each active Army and retired LU
graduate contribute an amount equal to one hundred times his or her pay grade to
establish the fund. Each donor who contributed the full amount received a
handsome Buffalo Soldier statue that was engraved to commemorate his or her
participation.
