13, 2008 |
The chapter will conduct its
annual reclamation event at the Fairfax County Government Center on
Saturday, September 13, 2008. This event is focused on connecting
and/or reconnecting "lost" and new LU alumni residing in the DC

also provides the opportunity to host the LU President, Dr.
Carolyn Mahoney, who will be in the area for a conference.
Additionally, our newly elected chapter officers will be sworn-in
at this event which kicks-off the chapter's 2008-2009 calendar.
The members of the Washington, DC Metro Chapter cordially invite all
LU alumni, parents of current LU students, and friends of Lincoln
University to join them in celebrating their "LU roots" and

Send Off Celebration |

On Saturday, July 26, 2008, almost
twenty members of the DC Metro chapter gathered at the Ward
Memorial A.M.E. Church for the "Send Off Celebration" for five Class of 2008 Spingarn High School
graduates -- James Gurley, Rodney Alston, Shayna Anderson, Purnell
Russell, and Alyssa Howard--who will attend LU beginning this
Fall. Each student received sage advice on the challenges
and rewards ahead and a gift certificate redeemable at the LU Book
Store for books and school supplies to get them started on their
way. Chapter members Jerome Offord, Latasha Solomon, French
Thompson, Linda Thompson, and Mary Rogers coordinated the event and chapter member
Jerome Smith, a Springarn graduate, provided financial
support. Some of the pictures taken at the event are
provided below.

University Yearbooks Are Now Available On-Line
LU
staff member Inas El-Sayed and his Page Library colleagues, Jean
Pace, Dave Brown, and Carmen Beck, wrote a grant that was funded
by the Missouri State Library. This grant and the support of
Dr. Mahoney, Mrs. Benicia Williams, and Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson,
enabled them to scan and digitize historic Lincoln University
Yearbooks and to make them internet accessible to historians,
scholars and LU graduates worldwide who might be interested in
the History of Lincoln University. The years covered are from
1915-1959, intermittently.
The
results of their digitization efforts are available via the web
site at the following URL/link:
http://www.sos.mo.gov/mdh/collections.asp.
After clicking on this URL/link, click on the underlined
choice (Books, Pamphlets & Monographs), then scroll down to get
to the Lincoln Collection, click on that link, make your
yearbook selection and then enjoy browsing the various pages of
the yearbook selected.
After viewing the LU yearbooks, Inas and his colleagues have
asked that you take a moment to visit (http://surveys.lincolnu.edu/takeSurvey.asp?surveyID=89)
and answer a questionnaire. All answers will be used for
statistical purposes only in research unless further permission
is obtained from any individual involved. They are conducting
this very short survey as the LU representatives in the
Association of Research Libraries--the Diversity Leadership
Program and will share your input with their colleagues during
the American Library Association Annual Conference at the end of
June 2008. Survey opinions are needed by June 12.

FROM: DONALD R. TINDALL, CHAPTER
PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow Lincoln University
Alumni,
If you did not attend the Chapter’s
recent Founders Day/Annual Giving Brunch at B. Smith's Restaurant,
you missed a real treat. Our Founders Day/Annual Gift Giving
celebration continues to provide us an excellent opportunity to
renew friendships and honor Lincoln University’s founders,
the soldiers of the 62nd and 65th Colored Infantry who sacrificed
and donated money to establish our beloved Lincoln University. It
also provides us the opportunity to kick-off our annual Gift
Giving Campaign to the Lincoln University Foundation. This year,
as in past years, we are again appealing to you for your pledges
and donations. You may make your pledge or donation anytime in
2008, but monies must be received by the Lincoln University
Foundation by June 30, 2008 to be published in their 2008 Annual
Report. Funds received after
that
date will be shown
in next year's report. Your donation is deductible for Federal
income tax purposes.
For your convenience, I have
attached a pledge form to indicate your donation. Also, attached
is a synopsis of the scholarship funds established by the
Washington, D.C. Chapter that you can designate your donation to.
You may also donate to the Soldiers Memorial Fund or other funds
such as the President's Restoration Fund. Checks should be made
payable to the Lincoln University Foundation with a notation in
the memo line of the check indicating the fund to which you wish
your money to go. Checks should be sent to our Chapter Treasurer
Ernest W. Harr is at 5009 14th Street, N.E.; Washington, D.C.
